PENTRIDGE

The portion of a church, which has been for some time in progress of erection on the village reserve, has been completed, and was opened for public worship by the Bishop of Melbourne on Sunday, December 30th, 1849. The speedy completion of this building reflects great credit upon the inhabitants of Pentridge and its neighbourhood, and may, it is hoped, be taken as an evidence of their earnest desire to obey the injunction of the apostle, and not to forsake the assembling of themselves together on the Lord's Day.

In addition to thus supplying the means of gathering a congregation for public worship, and of holding a Sunday school, it is also used as a school room, and a day school of 50 or 60 children has been already collected under an efficient master and mistress.

The building is 30 feet long and 25 feet wide, is capable of accommodating 120 to 150 persons, and is so designed as to be easily increased, as the wants of the place require it, and the funds at the disposal of the Trustees permit.

PENTRIDGE

The children of the above schools held their first festival on Tuesday the 9th day of April, 1850. Although the day at its commencement was unfavourable, there were eighty-seven children present, who, about half past ten o'clock, took their seats in the church, and were briefly addressed by Mr. Edward Tanner. After enjoying themselves for some time at play, the children were assembled to a happy feast; the merry games of the morning were then resumed with fresh spirit, both by the scholars and their friends.

At four o'clock the children were once more collected together, and after singing the well known hymn "O, that will be joyful," prayer was offered up, and they returned home.

In the evening, Divine service was performed by the Rev. Septimus Lloyd Chase, which was attended by the inhabitants of Pentridge.
